Finding and Using Bridal Shower Game Templates Without Losing Your Mind

Okay so bridal shower game templates are literally everywhere online and that’s both amazing and completely overwhelming. I learned this the hard way back in spring 2023 when I had THREE showers in one weekend and needed to pull together game packages fast because two of the hosts waited until like ten days before to ask me for help.

The basic thing you need to know is that downloadable game templates come in a few different formats and not all of them are created equal. You’ve got PDFs which are the most common, then there’s editable PDFs, Canva templates, PowerPoint files, and sometimes JPEGs or PNGs. Each one has its own quirks and honestly the format matters way more than people think.

Where to Actually Find Good Templates

Etsy is gonna be your first stop probably. I buy tons of stuff there for clients and the quality ranges from absolutely gorgeous professional designs to… well, stuff that looks like someone made it in Microsoft Paint in 2003. The good thing about Etsy is you can read reviews before buying and most sellers are pretty responsive if something doesn’t work right. Prices usually run between $3 and $15 for a game package which typically includes 5-10 different games.

I also use Creative Market a lot for more upscale clients who want something that doesn’t look like every other shower. The designs there tend to be more sophisticated but you’re paying more too, like $12-30 for a set. Teachers Pay Teachers is weirdly good for this stuff too even though it’s meant for classroom materials – lots of teachers apparently make shower games on the side?

Pinterest will show you a million options but here’s what annoys me SO MUCH about Pinterest for this – half the links are broken or lead to blogs that want you to sign up for their email list just to get one printable, and then the printable is like super low resolution and looks terrible when you actually print it. Just skip the free Pinterest stuff unless you’re really desperate or have zero budget.

Types of Games That Actually Work

Not all bridal shower games are equal in terms of guest participation. I’ve seen some absolute duds that sounded cute online but then you get to the actual shower and nobody wants to do them or they’re too complicated to explain.

The classics that I always recommend templates for: Bridal Bingo (guests fill out prediction cards during gift opening), How Well Do You Know the Bride (multiple choice quiz), Wedding Mad Libs, What’s in Your Purse (scavenger hunt with points), and the Newlywed Game if you can get the groom involved. These work because they’re easy to explain and people get them immediately.

Templates for advice cards are huge right now – instead of a traditional guest book, guests fill out cards with marriage advice or date night ideas. These are less “game” and more “activity” but they photograph really well for Instagram which is why brides love them. My cat knocked over an entire stack of these once right before a shower and I had to reprint 40 cards at FedEx at like 7am on a Saturday, so maybe keep them somewhere safe.

Editing and Customizing Your Downloads

Here’s where people get tripped up. You buy a template that says “editable” but then you can’t figure out how to actually edit it. If it’s a Canva template you need a Canva account (the free version works for most things). If it’s an editable PDF you need Adobe Reader or sometimes a different PDF program – some of them only work with specific software and the seller doesn’t always tell you that upfront.

For Canva templates you just click the link the seller provides, it opens in your Canva account, and you can change colors, fonts, text, add photos, whatever. These are honestly the easiest to work with and I try to find Canva options whenever possible. You can also resize them which is clutch if you need to print at a different size than what was designed.

Regular PDFs that aren’t editable are just print-as-is. You download, you print, you’re done. Simple but zero flexibility for personalization. Sometimes that’s fine if the design already matches your theme perfectly.

Printing Considerations That Nobody Tells You

This is super important – check what size the template is designed for BEFORE you buy it. Most are standard 8.5×11 letter size but some are A4 (European size) or 5×7 cards or other weird dimensions. If you don’t check this you might buy something you can’t easily print at home.

Also pay attention to whether it’s designed for color or can work in black and white. Color printing at home eats through ink like crazy and if you need 30 copies of something you’re gonna spend more on ink than you would just going to a print shop. For large quantities I always tell people to upload their PDF to Staples or FedEx online – it’s usually like 15-30 cents per page for color depending on the paper quality you choose.

Cardstock is better than regular printer paper for games that guests keep or that get passed around a lot. It just feels more substantial and doesn’t get wrinkled as easily. You can print on cardstock at home if your printer can handle it (check your manual) or the print shops have tons of cardstock options.

Actually Using the Games at the Shower

Having the templates is one thing but you gotta think about the actual logistics of running these games during the party. I learned this during a shower in summer 2021 where the host had printed beautiful games but had no pens for anyone to use and we had to like… scramble to find enough pens from people’s purses. Always have pens. At least one per guest plus extras because pens disappear into some kind of void at parties.

For Bridal Bingo you need to hand out the cards before gift opening starts, obviously. Some templates come with blank bingo cards where guests fill in their own predictions of what gifts the bride will get, others come pre-filled with common gifts. The blank ones are more interactive but take more time to explain and some guests get confused about what to write.

Quiz-style games like “How Well Do You Know the Bride” work best if you’ve actually customized the questions to be specific to the actual bride. Generic templates have questions like “Where did the couple meet?” which is fine but if you can edit it to include inside jokes or really specific details it’s way more fun. This requires actually getting information from the bride ahead of time which means you need to plan ahead and not wait until the last minute.

Game Packages vs Individual Games

Most sellers offer both individual game downloads and packages. Packages are almost always better value if you need more than two games. Like you might pay $5 for one game or $12 for a package of eight games in the same design theme. The package also ensures everything matches which looks more professional in photos.

That said, you probably don’t need eight different games for one shower. That’s too many. I usually plan for 2-3 games max for a typical 2-3 hour shower, plus maybe an advice card activity. Any more than that and you’re spending the whole party playing games instead of actually socializing and it starts to feel like forced fun, you know?

Theme Matching

If the shower has a specific theme or color scheme you’ll want templates that match. Sellers usually show the colors clearly in their listing photos. Common themes I see templates for: floral/botanical, blush and gold, rustic/burlap, tropical, wine themed, tea party, and seasonal themes.

Sometimes you can find templates that are intentionally neutral or minimalist that work with any theme. These are good if you’re planning multiple showers and want to reuse designs or if you’re not sure about the final decor yet. Black and white designs are having a moment right now and they’re super versatile.

Digital vs Physical Games

Oh and there’s also digital game options now which is kind of a new thing – these are meant to be played on phones or tablets during virtual showers or even at in-person showers. Honestly I haven’t used these much because most of my clients still prefer physical printables, but they exist if you’re doing a Zoom shower or hybrid event.

For virtual showers you can also just share your screen and display the games that way. I’ve done this where I show the quiz questions on screen and people type their answers in the chat. It works okay but it’s not as engaging as in-person games, which like… obviously, virtual showers are just kinda inherently less fun but we made it work during the pandemic.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

The file won’t download properly – usually this means your internet connection dropped during download or your browser blocked it thinking it was spam. Try a different browser or check your downloads folder because sometimes it actually did download but you didn’t see the notification.

The colors look different when printed – this happens because screens display color differently than printers. If color accuracy is super important, you might need to do a test print first. Print shops can usually color-match better than home printers.

Text is cut off when printing – check your printer settings and make sure it’s set to “actual size” or “100%” and not “fit to page” which can crop things weirdly. Also check the margins in your print settings.

Can’t edit the “editable” PDF – you might need Adobe Acrobat (the paid version) instead of just Adobe Reader. Some sellers don’t make this clear. This is super frustrating and honestly sellers should be more upfront about what software is required.

Creating Your Own If You’re Feeling Ambitious

You can totally make your own templates if you want complete control or have very specific needs. Canva has tons of free elements and templates you can start from. The pro version ($13/month) gives you way more options and is worth it if you’re planning multiple events or if you’re like me and use it for business stuff too.

PowerPoint or Google Slides also work for creating game templates. It’s not as intuitive as Canva but you probably already have access to these programs. There are tutorials on YouTube for basically any type of game you want to create.

The main thing with DIY is making sure everything is aligned properly and the text is readable. I’ve seen some homemade games where the font is too small or too fancy and guests literally can’t read them. Stick with simple fonts at 12-14 point minimum for body text.

Organizing Your Downloaded Files

I keep all my game templates organized in Google Drive with folders for each client or event. This way I can access them from anywhere and don’t lose them if my computer crashes. I also rename files immediately after downloading because sellers often use names like “BridalShowerGames_FINAL_v3.pdf” which tells you nothing when you have 50 files.

My naming system is: [Bride Name]_[Game Type]_[Date]. So like “Johnson_BridalBingo_May2024.pdf” – this makes everything searchable and I can find stuff years later if someone wants to reuse a design or… actually I’m not sure why I’d need something from years ago but it feels organized and that makes me happy.

Budget-Friendly Options

If you’re really on a tight budget there are decent free options out there. Some blogs offer free printables if you subscribe to their email list – annoying but functional. Canva has free templates you can customize. The quality isn’t always as high as paid templates but for a casual shower they work fine.

You can also buy one template and then DIY the rest in a matching style. Like buy the professionally designed invitation template and then recreate similar games yourself using the same colors and fonts. This is more work but saves money.

Another option is to split costs with other hosts if it’s a group-hosted shower. If there are four hosts, everyone paying $3-5 for a nice template package is pretty reasonable.

Last Minute Game Planning

Look, sometimes you just run out of time or forget about games until the last minute – it happens. For truly last-minute situations, focus on games that don’t require customization. Bridal Bingo with pre-filled cards, generic wedding trivia, word scrambles, these can all be downloaded and printed the morning of the shower if needed.

Many sellers offer instant download which means you get the files immediately after purchase instead of waiting for an email. Filter for instant download if you’re in a time crunch. And honestly, you could have just one good game plus an advice card activity and that’s totally sufficient for a shower. Don’t stress about having a huge variety of games – quality over quantity and also people want time to just chat and eat, not play games for three straight hours.
